The Fatherhood of God
We firmly believe in God as the creator of everything - of life, of our earth, and of the universe. Even though we call him “Father God” he is by no means a man (nor a woman) or man-like and it is difficult for our finite mind to comprehend his infiniteness so it is difficult to explain God. He is everything and he is in everything. He is the intelligent energy who created all that is. He is all around us and continues to create.
“You are the Great Spirit in miniature. That power can grow, expand, unfold, enlarge, flourish, bloom, as you allow it to do so. You determine its growth, none else can do it for you; that is the purpose of earthly life. [...] “1
The First Principle means that we are all Spirit or spiritual beings having a human experience. This reminds us to grow through life’s challenges and to bring kindness into the world around us.
The Brotherhood of Man
As God created every one of us and is in every one of us, we are all, in the wider sense, one big family and thus a brotherhood. This principle emphasizes that we are all equal and that we should not only accept others with all their imperfections while also helping and supporting them in their personal and spiritual development. The same applies to ourselves as well. Another aspect is the balance of giving and receiving. We are all spiritual beings and we may not only offer help to others but also accept it in return.
“We need to develop tolerance and understanding.” 2
The Second Principle builds on the First. As we are "only human" we are not expected to love everyone - that would be asking too much. Instead, it reminds us to show compassion and understanding, and to accept others for who they are.
The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels
This Principle is based on the understanding that all life is eternal and that physical death is not “the end” of life. As energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only change form. Therefore, when we pass into the Spirit World, we merely lose our physical shell while our soul continues to live on eternally.
Our loved ones in Spirit are still with us. They continue to love us, take part in our lives, and are often happy to communicate with us to show that they still care.
"But if we have the true wisdom we shall realise that the most perfect gift is to live close to the Spirit World and to know and love its messengers so inimately that thought flows from soul to soul, not through the instrumentality of some friendly medium." - George F. Berry The Seven-Pointed Star 3
The Third Principle reminds us that our loved ones are still around and continue to take part in our everyday lives. Even though they now live in Spirit, they still care deeply about us and often continue to share their thoughts and opinions — just as they did when they were physically here with us.
The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul
This Principle is closely connected to the previous one. As mentioned above, energy can neither be created nor destroyed — it merely changes its form. When we or our loved ones pass into the Spirit World, our souls continue to live on. We retain our personality, our character traits, and our individuality. We even continue to have a body — although in a much finer form.
“The concept of continuity contains within it the idea of growth, increased understanding and wisdom. If we came to know all the answers during the human passage of life, where would we find the challenges and opportunities of the future that encourage intellectual development and spiritual evolution?”4
The Fourth Principle reminds us that our souls existed long before we were born and continue to live after physical death. The years we spend in this earthly life are only a small part of our soul’s greater journey. How we choose to live our lives here lays the foundation for our continued growth in the Spirit World.
Personal Responsibility
There are many aspects to the Fifth Principle. It not only applies to how we treat ourselves, our friends, and our family, but also to how we treat people in everyday life — our neighbours, the elderly lady at the grocery store, or the person behind the counter. Our actions affect not only those close to us, but humanity as a whole. This Principle reflects the natural law of cause and effect: every action creates a reaction.
We all possess free will and are therefore responsible for our words, our actions, and even our thoughts. What we say and do has an impact not only on our own lives, but often on the lives of others as well.
Many people today are familiar with the idea that our thoughts and intentions carry energy. If we choose kindness, compassion, and loving thoughts towards others, we contribute to the energy we bring into the world around us. Even small actions can create meaningful change.
The more aware we become of our thoughts, intentions, actions, and reactions, the more deeply we begin to understand and accept our personal responsibility.
Compensation and Retribution Hereafter for all the Good and Evil Deeds done on earth
The natural law of cause and effect is once again reflected in this Principle, which builds upon the previous one. If we choose to harm or hurt others, we cannot expect love, kindness, and respect in return.
The word “hereafter” does not necessarily refer to the Spirit World, but rather to what follows after our thoughts, words, or actions. Most of us can probably remember moments in life when we regretted something almost immediately after saying or doing it and wished we could take it back. While we cannot change the past, we can learn from our mistakes so that we may respond differently when faced with a similar situation again.
Many religions believe in a so-called Judgement Day after death. In Spiritualism, however, we do not believe that God — or anyone else — judges us. Instead, we believe that we ourselves reflect upon our lives, our actions, and our words.
In this sense, every day — both here and in the Spirit World — can be seen as an opportunity for reflection, growth, and learning. Every day, we are given the choice to become the best version of ourselves.
Eternal Progress Open to every Human Soul
The Seventh Principle reflects the six previous ones. Our soul naturally seeks growth and progress; however, it is our own choice whether we follow that path. The word “open” reminds us that the opportunity for growth is always there, but it is up to us what we make of it — both here on Earth and in the Spirit World.
I firmly believe that we find happiness and fulfilment when we listen to our soul and follow its path. Often, it is only much later that we begin to understand why certain experiences, challenges, and changes became part of our journey and how deeply they helped us to grow.
"[...] there is a duality of experience. This dualilty is the conscious mind of which you are very much aware. Then, you have the soul mind that you rarely listen to. When we start to be aware and to connect to this inner power, we begin to recognise that this great Intelligence that is often termed 'God' moves through all that lives." 5
