Modern Spiritualism
History
Humankind has most likely always been fascinated by the afterlife, the Spirit World, and the question of what happens after death. But what exactly is “Modern Spiritualism”?
The birth of Modern Spiritualism is generally dated to March 31, 1848, in Hydesville, New York. The Fox family had recently moved into a small house where mysterious rapping noises could repeatedly be heard, especially at night.
On the evening of March 31, the two younger daughters, Margaretta and Catherine Fox, began interacting with the sounds. They clapped their hands and snapped their fingers, and the noises responded with the same number of knocks. Their mother then asked the sounds to count to ten, which they did correctly. She later asked for the ages of her children and again received the correct number of responses.
It was later discovered that a peddler had reportedly been murdered in the house several years earlier. Strange noises had been heard there before, but no one had ever attempted to communicate with them.
News of the events in Hydesville spread quickly, and many people came to witness the phenomena for themselves. Within only a few weeks, numerous signed witness statements documenting these communications with the Spirit World had already been collected.
The events in Hydesville are therefore regarded as a major turning point and the beginning of Modern Spiritualism. They supported the belief that:
-
it is possible to communicate with the Spirit world,
-
there are mediums, and
-
there is indeed a life after death.
Modern Spiritualism soon spread throughout the United States and eventually reached England, where Spiritualism is still recognized as a religion today.
In 1901, the Spiritualists’ National Union (SNU) was founded in England and continues to unite many spiritualist churches and organizations across the country.
Religion
In England, Spiritualism is a recognized religion with churches throughout the country where regular services are held.
During these services, there are prayers, inspirational addresses, and demonstrations of mediumship.
As part of my training, I have already had the opportunity to participate in many church services and to demonstrate mediumship from the platform myself. During a demonstration, the medium establishes a connection with the Spirit World without initially knowing who in the audience the communication is intended for.
Through the evidence provided by the medium, the recipient gradually recognizes their loved one or friend in Spirit. Since each contact usually lasts less than eight minutes, the information needs to be clear and specific.
Of course, recipients respond only with “yes,” “no,” or “I don’t know,” so that no information is passed from the audience to the medium.
Many religions believe in life after death. Spiritualism, however, goes one step further and views mediumship as a way of experiencing and demonstrating the continuation of life beyond physical death.
The Philosophy
Spiritualism is not founded on commandments, a creed or dogma, but on the Seven Principles which were delivered through the mediumship of Emma Hardinge Britten.
This philosophy still forms the foundation of Modern Spiritualism today. However, it is not only meant to be understood, but also lived. By trying to integrate the Seven Principles into our daily lives, we not only develop spiritually, but also learn to approach ourselves and others with greater awareness, compassion, and understanding.
The longer I study the Seven Principles, the more I recognize how deeply they influence everyday life and how profoundly they can support our personal and spiritual growth.
Upcoming public Services & Events
I regularly serve in open online Divine Services within Modern Spiritualism, amongst others with the Spiritualists' National Union International.
These Services are open to the public and offer the possibility to experience mediumship and to learn about the Philosophy of Spiritualism.

Public Demonstration of Mediumship (German language)
Over time, I realized that opportunities to experience public demonstrations of mediumship and spirit communication are still quite rare in Germany.
For this reason, I will occasionally offer public online evenings via Zoom for German-speaking participants.
These evenings will include an introduction to the philosophy of Modern Spiritualism, followed by a demonstration of mediumship.
